§ 1a-416. Original issue license plates -- Alternative stickers -- Rulemaking. (Effective 10/1/2026)

Original issue license plates -- Alternative stickers -- Rulemaking.
(1)
The owner of a motor vehicle that is a model year 1973 or older may apply to the division for permission to display an original issue license plate.
Before approving an application described in this section, the division shall determine that the original issue license plate:
(a)
is of a format and type issued by the state for use on a motor vehicle;
(b)
has numbers and characters that are unique and do not conflict with existing license plate series in this state;
(c)
is legible, durable, and otherwise in a condition that serves the purposes of this chapter; and
(d)
is from the same year of issue as the model year of the motor vehicle on which the original issue license plate is to be displayed.
(4)
(a)
Except as provided in this section, the owner of a motor vehicle displaying an original issue license plate approved under this section is not exempt from any requirement described in this chapter.
(b)
An original issue license plate approved under this section is exempt from:
(i)
the provisions of Section 41-1a-401 regarding reflectorization; and
Notwithstanding Subsection (4)(a), if a motor vehicle displaying an original issue license plate is also a classic vehicle as defined in Section 41-28-101, the motor vehicle qualifies for the same exemptions as a classic vehicle.
(5)
In accordance with Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act, the division may make rules for the implementation of this section.
