§ 115C-83. 2. Purposes.

(Applicable before the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year) The purposes of this Part are to ensure that (i) difficulty with reading development is identified as early as possible; (ii) students receive appropriate instructional and support services to address difficulty with reading development and to remediate reading deficiencies; and (iii) each student and his or her parent or guardian be continuously informed of the student's academic needs and progress. (Applicable beginning with the 2022-2023 school year) The purposes of this Part are to ensure that (i) difficulty with reading development is identified as early as possible; (ii) students receive appropriate literacy interventions to address difficulty with reading development and to remediate reading deficiencies; and (iii) each student and his or her parent or guardian be continuously informed of the student's academic needs and progress. In addition to the purposes listed in subsection (a) of this section, the purpose of this Part is to determine that progression from one grade to another be based, in part, upon proficiency in reading. History (2012-142, s. 7A.1(b); 2021-8, s. 6(a).) Subsection (a) Set Out Twice. - The first version of subsection (a) set out above is applicable before the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. The second version subsection (a) set out above is applicable beginning with the 2022-2023 school year. Editor's Note. - Session Laws 2012-142, s. 7A.1(b), enacted this section as G.S. 115C-83.1 B. It has been renumbered as this section at the direction of the Revisor of Statutes. Session Laws 2021-8, s. 1, provides: "This act shall be known as the "Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021." Session Laws 2021-8, s. 6(m), made the amendments to subsection (a) by Session Laws 2021-8, s. 6(a), applicable beginning with the 2022-2023 school year. Effect of Amendments. - Session Laws 2021-8, s. 6(a), substituted "literacy interventions" for "instructional and support services" in subsection (a). For applicability, see editor's note.
