§ 48:12-166.
Any person who shall: a. Travel or attempt to travel on any train on a railroad without having previously
paid his fare and with intent to avoid payment thereof; or b. Having paid his fare for a certain distance, knowingly and willfully proceed on
such train beyond such distance without previously paying the additional fare for
the additional distance, and with intent to avoid the payment thereof; or c. Knowingly and willfully refuse or neglect on arriving at the point to which he
has paid his fare to quit such train: Shall for every such offense forfeit to the company running the train a sum not exceeding
$5.00. On complaint made on oath and after summary hearing of the facts and circumstances
or on admission of the parties, any magistrate of the municipality where the offender
may be arrested shall have jurisdiction to impose such fine with costs. The arrest may be made by any police officer or by a commissioned railroad policeman.
